Say It Global Translations has recently had a very interesting meeting with a group of linguists based in Italy.
We thought it would be beneficial to share a brief of this meeting to keep professional translators informed about the ongoing efforts and collaborations amongst linguists in different countries to unify professionals and create a leverage for change in the challenging times the translation industry in particular, and the language field in general, is currently facing and has been facing for many years.
Bianca, the spokesperson of this particular group, discussed with us the issues which the industry is currently experiencing and she explained all the steps being taken to tackle this problem.
“Our profession has become INVISIBLE”, she explained, “and we are expected to deliver work of outstanding quality, while dedicating longer hours and greater efforts for an unacceptable rate.”.
“We are ALREADY an accredited federated union, with Confesercenti. And rather than just sitting around, waiting to feed off the scraps of projects left for us, we are now in a good position to proactively take part in joint discussions about our sector and its future.”.
This made me think of the “Translator’s Invisibility” concept – the famous term coined by the scholar Lawrence Venuti, who explains this “invisibility” as a strategy to mirror the original text in the target language and culture in the most natural way possible.
Ironically and sadly, this illusory “invisibility” has become a REAL INVISIBILITY in today’s industry. This is where we step in.
Say It Global Translations is currently cooperating with different professionals in the UK and Italy with the goal of unifying as many professional linguists as possible to make a stand and improve the landscape of the translation industry.
